Beyond the Shoreline — Nirwana Gardens Bintan Takes Meaningful Action on World Earth Day
In celebration of Earth Day on 22 April, Nirwana Gardens Bintan organised two environmental initiatives held at different times and locations: a beach clean-up at 08:00 Bintan time and an ocean clean-up at 14:00 Bintan time. These initiatives reflect the resort’s ongoing commitment to preserving the natural environment that supports both its guests and the surrounding ecosystem.
In the morning, more than 20 staff members gathered along the shoreline of Banyu Biru Villa Beach, equipped with gloves and waste bags. Working together along the coast, the team collected various types of plastic waste washed ashore. Most of the debris consisted of single-use plastics carried by ocean currents, rather than originating from the immediate area.
This phenomenon is common across many coastal regions and serves as a reminder that plastic pollution knows no boundaries. Every piece of waste collected represents one less threat to marine life and ocean health.
In the afternoon, four certified divers, namely Jaz (Dive Instructor), Richard (Rescue Diver), and Jufri (Divemaster), carried out an underwater clean-up in the waters surrounding the resort’s water sports area. The findings were encouraging, with very little plastic waste detected beneath the surface. Most of the debris retrieved consisted of discarded fishing nets and damaged fishing equipment entangled underwater.
These results indicate that the marine ecosystem surrounding Nirwana Gardens remains well-preserved and in a healthy condition. It reflects the resort’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship and demonstrates that consistent efforts can lead to meaningful impact.
As part of its ongoing sustainability programme, the next ocean clean-up activities are scheduled for 15 July and 15 October 2026. Nirwana Gardens warmly invites guests, visitors, and members of the public who share a passion for ocean conservation to take part. Every small action, when done collectively, can make a significant difference.
